The expansion of sea bass farms with hazardous effects on the sea life in Sığacık Bay has been annulled by the Supreme Court’s 14th Unit.
There have been continuous protests against the fish farms risking the sea life in one of the most beautiful bays of Seferihisar. The companies planning to expand their fish farms had been granted a formal environmental approval. The activists supported by Seferihisar Municipality, NGO’s and residents sued against the environmental report via Izmir 4th Administrative Court, which resulted in the annulment of the approval.
The fish farm company had filed an appeal, but the Supreme Court ratified the decision of the Administrative Court overruling the environmental approval. At the end of the legal process, the sea bass projects were cancelled.
Seferihisar Mayor Tunç Soyer said that the Supreme Court’s decision would help saving Sığacık Bay and inspire the activists fighting against similar projects in other cities.
