Turkey’s Seed Festival

People from all over Turkey brought genuine seeds and local products for Seferihisar Municipality’s “We Revive the Local Seeds” activity on May 13th . All local products were cooked according to traditional recipes in the mobile kitchen named Anatolian Food. In the last five years, Seferihisar Municipality freely distributed one million seeds and seedlings and an additional 100.000 at this year’s festival.

The festival area was in Urkmez neighborhood of Seferihisar. Along Seferihisar, North Cyprus Mehmetcik, Mugla Metropolitan, Diyarbakir Metropolitan, Tekirdag, Avcilar, İncirliova, Cine, Evciler Municipalities, Foca Earth Table, GEMA Foundation, TEMA Foundation, EGEÇEP, Turgutlu Yaşamder, Local Seed Center Peninsula and Mugla branches and Seferihisar Can Yucel Seed Center participated in the seed festival.

Seferihisar Mayor Tunc Soyer started his speech at the ceremony by commemorating 301 mining martyrs, who passed away on the Soma mining disaster three years ago. Mayor Soyer expressed his gratitude to the festival participants from different regions of Turkey. He stated that after the foundation of Can Yucel Seed Center, the Zeka Bey Seed Center in North Cyprus has been established. He added: “There are many seed centers all over Turkey now. Everybody started to discover and multiply the genuine seeds in their neighborhood. For the first time, we prepared lunch with these seeds and we are proud to create a complete food chain with the local seeds for this occasion.”

Mayor Soyer also explained why the festival area is located in Urkmez neighborhood. “Urkmez is one of the most beautiful places on earth.” He said. “The 8 km’s beach could be compared to Miami and French Riviera. We would do our best to promote the qualities of this beautiful beach to the people in Izmir, Turkey and to foreign visitors. “
