The regional management of Izmir Marine Products’ Cooperative visited Mayor Soyer, who stands up against fish farms planned to be located in Sigacik Bay.

Mr. Ahmet Yazici, The President of Izmir Marine Products’ Cooperative and the board members expressed their gratitude to Mayor Soyer and declared the support of their members owning 1750 vessels in total. Ahmet Yazici stated that the fish farms causes pollution of sea and bays, effects the marine ecology, the perishing of moss because of the solid waste of the fish accumulating on the sea bed and therefore the perishing of the fish.

FISH FARMS DON’T ATTUNE TO TOURISM

Mayor Soyer commented as follows: “We keep saying that the location for the fish farms are wrongfully determined. The specialists and court experts have also provided their opinion accordingly. Izmir is a tourism city. Seferihisar’s future is in agriculture and tourism. Tourism and fish farms are not attuned to each other. If there is a blue-flagged marina, if the umber of the blue-flagged beaches increase, if tourism investments are made in your city, you should not fish farm in the sea. There is a sharp sample of this situation: There are numberless amounts of fish farms in Hong Kong, but sailboats or yachts to be seen. They opted for fish farms. And in the contrary, there aren’t any fish farms in Portofino, Italy, but hundreds of sailboats, vessels and yachts travel nearby.  The fish farms and tourism don’t match well with each other. “
