The famous ancient bread and Armola cheese of Seferihisar will be promoted during the festival in Ulamış village on Saturday, 21st July 2018. The bread, which will be introduced during the festival, is made of the rare Topan Karakılçık wheat in traditional ovens.
Seferihisar Mayor Tunç Soyer: "We came across a small amount of Topan Karakılçık wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) firstly at the 1st Seed Swap Festival we organized in 2011 in Gödence village. This particular wheat faces the risk of extinction. Can Yucel Seed Center planted and multiplied the seed samples. We grained the seeds in the stone mill, mixed with yeast and baked in the traditional oven in Ulamis and Turgut villages. This bread can be purchased at www.seferibakkal.com. During this festival the bread made of last year’s harvest will be served with traditional armola cheese. "
The festival will start at noon.
From a Handful of Seeds to Acres of Wheat
Seferihisar Municipality started the project in Ulamış village and distributed free Topan Karakılçık wheat to the farmers. Seferihisar Mayor Tunç Soyer stated that the municipality will purchase the 2018 wheat harvest for twice the price of the state’s minimum price.
Topan Karakılçık wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) is rarely found in the last decades. Seferihisar Municipality found the seeds of this wheat variety and produced at Can Yücel Seed Center to make flavour and bread with the traditional cooking methods. The municipality was looking for solutions to raise the income of the villagers and farmers, so after the success of the traditional bread, this new project has been developed.
The municipality signed an agreement with the farmers to guarantee the purchase of their harvest for twice the price of the announced state base price.
